Camera Obscura

Portmeirion Camera Obscura 1

The Camera Obscura was built as a lighthouse in 1937-38, and a submarine's lens/mirror mechanism was installed around 1949. This device gives a view of the surrounding area, cast onto a tabletop inside. It is one of only a few such optical devices still in operation in the U.K.

If you are interested in knowing more about these mechanisms, visit the Magic Mirror of Life web.
