Clarice was born
in 1894 at Defoe Road, Stoke Newington, London, the
only daughter to parents Robert, an author of 17
novels between 1899 and 1916 - writing under the
pen-name of Robert
Halifax - and Louise.
She had one brother, Leo.
Clarice was a PBX telephone
operator in the city of London at the time when the
Zeppelin raids were being made and on 9th March
1918 moved to Shrewsbury to escape them.
She married Harold
Sidney Lawrence, an
engineer in 1917 while he was serving in the Royal
Flying Corp. They had one son, David
Lawrence, in
1927.
In 1935 the couple built a
bungalow on the seafront at Jaywick, Essex, and
spent many week-ends there until 1946
Clarice was a voracious
reader, especially biographies, reading late into
the night.
During WWII when the family
lived at Watford, N.W. London, she owned a small
gift shop near Bushey railway station.
Harold and Clarice lived in
many suburbs around London including Richmond,
Surrey. They retired to Saltdean, Sussex and
finally to Newhaven, Sussex..
Clarice Lawrence died in
1968
