Frank Lloyd Wright and Clough William-Ellis have two things in common: Welsh heritage and a natural conservation approach to architecture. They first met in the early nineteen thirties on an express train from Berlin to Moscow, where CWE was attending an architectural and planning conference. When they reached the Russian border, FLW refused to allow his drawing case to be searched by Russian customs officials. CWE talked sense into FLW, and averted what might have been a very unpleasant incident.

Frank Lloyd Wright returned to Wales in 1956 to accept an honorary degree from the University of Wales. He took a tour of Wales, including a stop at Portmeirion. His reaction to seeing the unique architectural mixture was to give high praise, and then to take CWE on his own tour of Portmeirion, showing the creator what Lloyd Wright particularly liked. He also gave a great compliment to CWE by saying to Amabel Williams-Ellis, "Why I do believe you married an architect."
