Hotel Portmeirion (Y Gwesty)

Hotel Portmeirion

The Hotel dated back to 1862 and was originally the mansion Aber Ia. It was converted by Sir Clough in 1925, officially opened for business at Easter 1926. The Hotel was destroyed by a fire in 1981 and reopened again in 1988. It is built up against the rock face, in which can be found the remnants of old lead mine workings dating back to the 1790s. Some of the original mine tunnels were converted into an effective wine cellar. The hotel interior is not open to day visitors. Since 1988, the route to the hotel beach and coastal path has been via a tunnel under the Fountain and Anchor approach road.

There are 14 rooms in the Hotel, and several serviced rooms and suites scattered around the village cottages. All rooms have private bathrooms, direct-dial telephones, and color televisions.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the elegant Hotel restaurant. Non-residents may have lunch and dinner in the hotel, subject to availability. Reservations are usually a good idea, especially for Saturday evenings and the Sunday lunch carvery, which are each quite popular.

The Hotel's exterior, the pool, the dining room, and the Stone Boat were all extensively used in the film 'Under Suspicion' (starring Liam Neeson).
